Given a symbol in Kn F/2^m Kn F of effective exponent 2{m-1}, one can ask how many symbols are required to express it as a sum of symbols in Kn/2^{m-1} Kn F. We show that the number is 2{n-1}. Similar questions on sums of two or three symbols in Kn F/2m Kn F are also considered, and for n=2, also sums of up to six symbols.
